About the trip

April 25th, 2008

Since 2006, Falkirk High School has been in partnership with Bandawe Girls School in Malawi. When these links were first forged by MASCOTT (Malawi and Scottish Teachers Together) and the Maimie Martin Fund, with the full backing of the Scottish government and the then First Minister Jack McConnell, Malawi was very much in the “public eye”. This public profile has lessened somewhat but the day-to-day troubles of the staff and pupils at the school have not.
The girls of Bandawe have to face poverty, health problems and family loss; yet they do so with great dignity and maturity for such young people. The vibrant school environment provides the girls with a haven where they can forget all their troubles and socialise with their classmates whilst also receiving an education in a safe and secure setting. Despite their lack of many basic materials required for learning, their thirst for knowledge and love of school is unwavering.
It is our intention to visit the school this summer (June/July ’08) and experience Malawian school life.
