Photo Gallery Tutorial

November 30th, 2009

Adding a new photo album page couldn’t be simpler now (well, compared to the last method, anything is simpler). Follow the steps below to get your photo album page published in no time at all.

Step 1. Assuming you’ve logged in, add a new page (Pages -> Add New).

Step 2. Give your new page a title.

Step 3. Click on the icon shown to add images.

Step 4. A new box should pop up on screen. This is where you can select and manipulate image files you want to add to the photo gallery. Click the ‘Select Files’ button.

Step 5. After clicking the ‘Select Files’ button, a file browser window will open allowing you to navigate to the appropriate folder on your computer where you have stored the images you want to upload. You may select as many as you like for upload. The more you select, the longer the upload process will take. Also, if you are uploading full-sized images, this will make the process longer as well. If you have a lot of files to upload, you may want to consider resizing them first (make copies, don’t overwrite the originals). 1024×768 is a good size to select for resizing. It retains image quality and keeps file sizes small.

When you have selected the files you want to upload, the dialogue box will then show the upload progress. When a file is uploaded, it is automatically resized to create thumbnails and other intermediate sizes for use in the gallery or elsewhere.

Step 6. When the upload process is complete (you may have to scroll the window down to see the progress), click on the ‘Media Library’ tab (1) to verify the files are in the library (2). Then click on the ‘Gallery’ tab (3) to set the parameters for the photo gallery page.

Step 7. The ‘Gallery’ tab will show the files which will be included in your photo album page. You can change the order images appear in simply by dragging a file up or down the list.

Step 8. Scroll the box to the bottom to see the Gallery Settings. Normally you would not need to change these parameters, but you can adjust things to suit your preferences. If you are happy with the settings, click the ‘Inset Gallery’ button.

Step 9. When you insert the gallery you will be returned to the main editing page and you will see a place-holder for your gallery.

That is pretty much all you need to do to set up a basic photo gallery page, but you may wish to ‘embellish’ your gallery. The most obvious thing you may wish to do is add captions to some or all of your photos. To do this, click on the ‘Edit’ icon on the Gallery placeholder.

The Image dialogue box will open up again. Click on the ‘Gallery’ tab (if it isn’t already active). You will notice that to the right of each image there is a ‘Show’ link. Click on it and it reveals the parameters for individual images. You can add a caption as shown.

Once you have edited all of the images you wish, scroll to the bottom of the box and click on the ‘Save all changes’ button and close the box.

Your page is not restricted to just the photos and you can add text, or any other content, to the page.

Finally, once you are happy with the page, make sure the page settings are correct. You can ‘Preview’ (1) the page to make sure it looks the way you expect. Continue editing as necessary. Then, make sure the page is added into the appropriate place in the page structure (2), then ‘Publish’ (3) your photo album.

You can add photos to an existing album by editing the album (via the placeholder or using the upload image link) and following the procedure in Step 5.

Easy, peasy!
